KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 2): In celebration of World Town Planning Day, which falls on Nov 8, the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) is hosting its yearly National Planning Congress (NPC) 2023 in Putrajaya, alongside Putrajaya Corporation and PLANMalaysia.
Based on the theme “Madani Planning in SDG2030 acceleration”, the event will see speakers from various Commonwealth and ASEAN nations join in to share their insights on urban planning.
A variety of sub-themes will be explored through parallel sessions held during the congress, such as “Building city resiliency”, “Fostering innovation through planning”, “Social inclusivity towards resilient growth”, “National and regional transboundary planning strategies” and “Building sustainable city for future generations”.
In an exclusive interview with EdgeProp, MIP President Datin TPr Hjh Noraida Saludin shared the concept behind the NPC.
No one left behind
According to Noraida, inclusivity is the core of urban planning, especially as the nation rallies towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2023.
“When we talk about inclusivity, we talk about city planning for everybody. It means that no one is left behind,” she said.
Cognisant of the advancement in data and technology, Noraida said the congress hopes to foster innovation in planning by addressing more ways to equip the nation in building resilient infrastructure, which is crucial in sustainable urban planning.
“It is not just about technology but the ways we can leverage technology in urban development so that cities become more efficient,” Noraida stressed.
NPC 2023 will serve as a platform to address urban planning challenges at national and regional levels, with collaboration from the Department of Town and Country Planning (PLANMalaysia) and the Commonwealth Association of Planners, where an extended international focus on Commonwealth countries will be included..

NPC 2023 will be held on Nov 8 and 9 at Kompleks Persidangan Perbadanan Putrajaya. The line-up speakers and moderators include regional and local experts in city and urban planning and design.
