Family dispute over late Jamaluddin Jarjis’ estate goes to trial as settlement talks falls through
KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 11): An ongoing dispute initiated by Tan Sri Jamaludin Jarjis’ widow Puan Sri Dr Kalsom Ismail for the late minister’s RM2.1 billion estate will go to trial, after settlement talks initiated in November last year failed to materialise.
Syariah High Court Judge Abdul Shukor Abd Hamid decided on Monday that the faraid matter will proceed to trial. Abdul Shukor also fixed Oct 9 for mention to fix a hearing date.
Faraid is a concept in Islamic law to determine the distribution of property to the heirs of a deceased.
Kalsom was present with one of her daughters, and was represented by Datuk Sulaiman Abdullah.
One of the five defendants named by Kalsom, Jamaludin’s eldest son Ikhwan Hafiz Jamaludin, was also present on Monday. He was represented by Zuri Zabuddin Budiman.
Also named as defendants are Ikhwan’s siblings Nur Anis Jamaludin, Noor Adilla Jamaludin and Nurul Alyaa Jamaluddin; as well as Jamaluddin’s mother Aminah Abdullah.
Aminah, who was not present, was represented by Nur Hidayah A Bakar and Farhan Haziq.
The outcome of the close-door proceedings was disclosed by Nur Hidayah to reporters.
It was previously reported that parties were exploring to settle the long-standing dispute out of court.
Ikhwan Hafiz and his sister Nur Anis were given letters of administration by the Civil Court in 2017 to manage the estate.
Jamaludin passed away in a helicopter crash near Semenyih with five others in April 2015. He was Umno Member of Parliament for Rompin at the time.
He also served as minister of science, technology and innovation from 2004 to 2008, and was also the Malaysian ambassador to the US from 2009 to 2012.
The Edge previously reported that the late Jamaluddin was said to have several bank accounts locally and abroad, along with several properties, including houses in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the US.
Kalsom is claiming one-eighth of the estate, while Aminah is claiming one-sixth of them under the faraid system.
