KL areas inundated due to heavy rainfall — DBKL

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 15): Several areas in the capital were inundated on Tuesday morning due to heavy rainfall, with the reading taken at the city centre showing over 114 millimetres (mm) per hour, almost double the normal reading of 60mm per hour.
The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said that continuous rain, starting from around 8.30am, caused several areas to be flooded due to the overflowing of the main rivers, namely Sungai Batu, Sungai Klang and Sungai Gombak.
Among the affected areas were Jalan Pantai Baharu, Jalan Parlimen (Dato Onn Roundabout), Jalan Kinabalu, Jalan Maharajalela, Jalan Travers, Jalan Damansara (below the Semantan flyover), Jalan Ledang, Jalan Segambut, Jalan Genting Klang (opposite Shell and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman), Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, and Jalan Sultan (Petaling Street).
“DBKL personnel were at the scenes to ensure the situation at the affected areas was under control.
“Some of the initiatives taken included diverting traffic to ensure smoother traffic flows. As of 10.45am, all main routes in the city centre had been opened, except Jalan Rahmat. The DBKL has also activated two static pumps in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah,” it said in a statement on Tuesday.
The DBKL also said that it had brought in three mobile pumps to drain the stagnant water around the Dato Onn roundabout, which was flooded, and that the situation returned to normal at 9.18am.
“The DBKL has completed clean-up works around Jalan Parlimen, while Jalan Sultan is still being cleaned up.
“Based on the proactive measures taken by the DBKL, a majority of the affected areas were under control and the stagnant water subsided after 30 minutes,” it added.
The DBKL, however, advised road users to be cautious when passing through areas where the water levels had not fully subsided.
